# Sequence personalization

> Choose how to personalize your sequence content.

## Overview

Personalization adapts a sequence's content to each recipient. An email can use
the person's name in its greeting, ask a question about their company, and reuse
the same product description across recipients.

Choose the method based on what should change:

| Method | Use it for | Example |
| - | - | - |
| [Template variables](/reference/sequences/personalization/template-variables) | Inserting an existing value from Unify. | Greet someone by their first name. |
| [Snippets](/reference/sequences/personalization/snippets) | Reusing copy with optional variables and fallback text. | Name the person's company in a question, or use “your team” when the name is missing. |
| [Smart snippets](/reference/sequences/personalization/smart-snippets) | Generating a short passage from a prompt and recipient data. | Write an opening question suited to the person's role. |

You can combine these methods in automatic and manual emails. Manual email
steps also give a rep an opportunity to review and edit the message before
sending. Phone call and action item notes can use variables and snippets to give
the rep context for their task.

## Review the complete message

In the sequence builder, expand the email preview and select a person to see
how the content reads with their details. Select a sending mailbox when you use
sender variables, and check several recipients with different data.

For snippets, turn on the fallback preview and read the email again. A fallback
should fit the surrounding sentence and preserve the purpose of the message.
An email with a missing required value can be blocked from sending; see
[handling missing data](/reference/sequences/personalization/template-variables#handling-missing-data).
