# Template variables

> Insert person, company, and sender details into emails.

export const ThemedImageFrame = ({lightSrc, darkSrc, alt, caption}) => <Frame caption={caption}>
    <div className="block w-full dark:hidden">
      <OptimizedImage className="w-full" src={lightSrc} alt={(alt ?? caption) ?? ""} />
    </div>
    <div className="hidden w-full dark:block">
      <OptimizedImage className="w-full" src={darkSrc} alt={(alt ?? caption) ?? ""} />
    </div>
  </Frame>;

## Overview

Template variables insert values from Unify into your sequence emails, such as a
person's first name, job title, or company name. You write the email once, and
Unify fills in the values for each recipient.

Use variables for details you already have in Unify. If a sentence needs an
alternative when a value is missing, put it in a
[snippet with fallback text](/reference/sequences/personalization/snippets).

## Insert and preview a variable

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the field">
    Open an email step in the sequence builder. Place your cursor in the subject
    or message where the value belongs, then type `{` or click the variable icon
    in the editor.

    Choose a category, such as **Person**, **Company**, or **Sender**, then select
    the field. For example, select a person's first name to personalize a greeting.
    The editor displays the selected field as a variable.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the personalized email">
    Click the arrow beside the editor to expand the preview. Choose a person
    under **To** to see their values in the email. If you use sender variables,
    select a mailbox under **From** as well.

    Read the complete message to check punctuation and phrasing around the
    inserted values. Preview several people whose names, titles, or company
    details differ.

  </Step>
</Steps>

## Handling missing data

An email with a missing required variable is blocked from sending. Review the
[blocked enrollment](/reference/sequences/enrollments) and correct the affected
message before it can continue.

### Snippets

Use a [snippet](/reference/sequences/personalization/snippets) when you want to
provide alternate copy for missing data. For example, a question that names the
recipient's company can fall back to a question about “your team.” The fallback
applies to the text inside that snippet; variables elsewhere in the email still
need values.
