## Overview

<PlanAvailability plans="Business" />

Exclusions identify companies or people that your team should avoid contacting,
such as customers, competitors, or companies with open opportunities. Their
filters update the matches as your data changes.

An administrator creates the exclusion once, then your team uses it in sequence
rulesets, plays, or engagement policies. Each use determines where the
restriction applies.

## Create an exclusion

<Steps>
  <Step title="Name the exclusion">
    Open [**Settings → Exclusions**](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/features/exclusions)
    and click **New exclusion**. Enter a name that describes the group, such as
    “Existing customers.”
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the records and filters">
    Under **Conditions**, choose companies or people, then add filters for the
    records you want to exclude. A company exclusion also applies to people
    associated with the matching companies.

    For customers, use the CRM field that identifies their customer status.
    For a fixed set of companies, use a domain filter. Review the preview to
    confirm that the intended records match.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Save and choose sequence rulesets">
    Click **Create exclusion**. Select the sequence rulesets that should use
    the exclusion and review the estimated unenrollments before confirming.
    Matching active enrollments can stop when you enable an exclusion.

    The saved exclusion appears in workspace settings, where you can review
    its matching records or edit its filters.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Use the exclusion

Choose where the restriction should apply:

* For sequences, enable it in the relevant [rulesets](/reference/sequences/rulesets#exclusions).
  [Sequence exclusions](/reference/sequences/exclusions) explains enrollment checks
  and the effect on people already in a sequence.
* For plays, configure exclusions in the trigger or its source
  [audience](/tutorials/how-to-create-an-audience), depending on the trigger type.
* For users assigned to an [engagement policy](/reference/engagement-policies/engagement-policies),
  add it to the policy and choose its claiming and engagement restrictions.

Editing the exclusion's filters updates its definition everywhere it is used.
Review those uses before changing shared criteria.
